Patient Guide

Breathing Difficulty

Breathlessness (shortness of breath), wheezing or tightness in the chest may be caused by asthma, a chest infection, allergies or a number of other conditions.

Which doctor to consult

A pulmonologist, also called a chest specialist, is the doctor to consult for breathlessness, wheezing, asthma or a cough that will not settle. If you are unsure, a general physician can see you first.

When to consult a doctor

Breathing difficulty that is new, worsening or interfering with daily activity should be properly evaluated rather than managed at home.

When this is a medical emergency

Sudden, severe breathlessness, particularly with blue-tinged lips, chest pain or an inability to speak in full sentences, requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
