Patient Guide

Chest Pain

Chest pain has many possible causes, ranging from muscle strain and acid reflux to conditions that require urgent evaluation.

Which doctor to consult

A cardiologist, the specialist in conditions of the heart and circulation, is the doctor to consult for chest pain that may be related to the heart. If you are not sure where the pain is coming from, a general physician can see you first and advise whether a cardiology opinion is needed.

When to consult a doctor

If chest discomfort is new, unexplained or recurring, we advise having it assessed by a doctor rather than waiting for it to settle.

When this is a medical emergency

Sudden or severe chest pain, particularly with breathlessness, sweating, a feeling of pressure, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 (India's national ambulance service) or go directly to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
