Patient Guide

Stomach Pain

Pain in the stomach or abdomen is very common and has many possible causes, from indigestion, gas or a stomach upset to conditions that need prompt medical attention. Where the pain is, how severe it is and what comes with it help a doctor to judge what is happening.

Which doctor to consult

A general physician is the usual first doctor to see for stomach pain, indigestion or a stomach upset. Pain low in the abdomen in a woman may also be assessed by a gynaecologist (gynecologist).

When to consult a doctor

Stomach pain that lasts more than a day or two, keeps coming back, or comes with vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, loss of appetite or weight loss should be assessed by a doctor. Pain that wakes you at night also deserves an early assessment.

When this is a medical emergency

Sudden, severe stomach pain, a hard or rigid abdomen, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, or pain with fainting, a high fever or an inability to keep fluids down requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
