Patient Guide

Joint & Back Pain

Pain in the joints, knees, shoulders, neck or back is very common. Much of it follows strain, long hours in one posture or the wear of everyday life, and settles with time and gentle movement, but pain that persists or keeps returning deserves a proper assessment.

Which doctor to consult

A musculoskeletal and pain physician, a doctor trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation, is the doctor to consult for joint pain, back and neck pain, muscle pain, sciatica and frozen shoulder. If you are unsure, a general physician can see you first.

When to consult a doctor

Pain that has lasted more than a few weeks, keeps returning, wakes you at night, limits walking or daily activity, or spreads down an arm or leg with tingling or weakness should be assessed by a doctor. A joint that is swollen, warm and painful, or stiffness that is worst in the morning, is also worth having checked.

When this is a medical emergency

Severe pain after a fall or injury, a joint that is hot, red and swollen with fever, sudden weakness or numbness in a leg, numbness around the groin, loss of control of the bladder or bowel, or severe back pain with fever requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
