Patient Guide

Cough & Cold

A cough or a cold is very common and, in most people, settles by itself within a couple of weeks. Rest, fluids and time are often all that is needed, but a cough that lingers, or one that comes with other symptoms, deserves an assessment.

Which doctor to consult

A general physician is the usual first doctor to see for a cough and cold. A persistent cough, or one that comes with wheezing, breathlessness or repeated chest infections, may call for a chest specialist (pulmonologist), and our pulmonology doctors are on the Pulmonology page.

When to consult a doctor

A cough that lasts more than about three weeks, a cold that settles into the chest, a high fever that does not ease within a few days, or a cough with wheezing, breathlessness or thick yellow or green phlegm should be assessed by a doctor. A cough with weight loss or night sweats should always be assessed, whatever its length.

When this is a medical emergency

Coughing up blood, severe breathlessness, blue-tinged lips, or chest pain with a cough requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
