Patient Guide

Fever

Fever is the body's usual response to an infection and to a number of other causes. Many fevers settle within a few days with rest and plenty of fluids, but how long the fever lasts, how high it goes and how unwell the person appears all matter.

Which doctor to consult

A general physician is the usual first doctor to see for a fever in an adult. If the fever comes with a cough that will not settle, a chest specialist (pulmonologist) may be advised, and a child with a fever is usually seen by a paediatrician (pediatrician).

When to consult a doctor

A fever that lasts more than two or three days, keeps returning, or comes with a rash, severe pain, repeated vomiting or a cough that is getting worse should be assessed by a doctor. Please do not wait if the person is an older adult, is pregnant, or has a long-term condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease. A fever in a baby under three months old should always be assessed urgently.

When this is a medical emergency

A fever with a stiff neck, a severe headache, confusion or unusual drowsiness, difficulty breathing, a seizure, or a rash that does not fade under pressure requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 (India's national ambulance service) or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
