Headache & Nerve-Related Symptoms
Most headaches are harmless and resolve without treatment. However, persistent, severe or unusual headaches, or symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or seizures, may indicate a condition that needs further assessment.
Which doctor to consult
A neurologist, the specialist in the brain and nervous system, is the doctor to consult for headaches that keep returning or do not settle, including migraine, and for numbness or tingling, seizures, tremors and memory concerns. For an occasional mild headache, a general physician can see you first.
When to consult a doctor
A headache that is unusually severe, does not improve with rest, or is accompanied by changes in vision, weakness, numbness, confusion or slurred speech should be evaluated promptly.
When this is a medical emergency
A sudden, extremely severe headache (often described as the worst headache of one's life), a seizure, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, or loss of consciousness requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.
This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
