Patient Guide

Pregnancy & Women's Health

Periods, hormonal concerns, planning a pregnancy, antenatal care and difficulty conceiving are looked after by a gynaecologist (gynecologist) and obstetrician. Many of these concerns are common, and it is always reasonable to ask a doctor about them.

Which doctor to consult

A gynaecologist (gynecologist) and obstetrician is the doctor to consult for periods and hormonal concerns, planning a pregnancy, care before and during pregnancy, and difficulty conceiving.

When to consult a doctor

Irregular, missed, very painful or very heavy periods, pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis, unusual vaginal discharge, itching or odour, or difficulty conceiving after a year of trying should be assessed by a doctor. If you are planning a pregnancy, or think you may be pregnant, an early consultation is advisable, and regular antenatal check-ups should continue through the pregnancy.

When this is a medical emergency

Heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, bleeding or pain during pregnancy, reduced movement of the baby, a severe headache or blurred vision in pregnancy, or fainting requires emergency care immediately. Please call 108 or go directly to the nearest emergency department.

This page offers general information and is not a diagnosis. It cannot assess your individual condition; a consultation with one of our doctors can.
